How to get the first day of next month

✓ Verified in LibreOffice 25.8.7.3 ✓ Verified in Google Sheets (2026-08-30)

Roll any date forward to the 1st of the following month — for billing cycles, subscription renewals, and month-start schedules.

The formula

AppFormulaNotes
Excel (desktop)=EOMONTH(A2,0)+1EOMONTH(A2,0) is this month's last day; +1 lands on the 1st of next month. Works regardless of the day in A2.
Google Sheets=EOMONTH(A2,0)+1Identical. =DATE(YEAR(A2),MONTH(A2)+1,1) also works and self-corrects across December.
LibreOffice Calc=EOMONTH(A2,0)+1Identical.

How it works

EOMONTH(date, 0) jumps to the last day of the date's own month, so adding 1 always lands on the first day of the NEXT month — here 15 Aug 2026 → 31 Aug → 1 Sep 2026. Because it's anchored to month-end rather than doing arithmetic on the day number, it doesn't care whether the month has 28, 30 or 31 days, and it rolls over the year end cleanly (EOMONTH of any December + 1 = 1 January). The DATE(YEAR,MONTH+1,1) form gives the same answer and also handles the December wrap, since month 13 rolls into the next January. For the first day of the CURRENT month use DATE(YEAR(A2),MONTH(A2),1) or A2-DAY(A2)+1; for N months ahead, EOMONTH(A2,N-1)+1. Format the result cell as a date, since the formula returns a date serial number.

Verified, not just documented

We ran =TEXT(EOMONTH(DATE(2026,8,15),0)+1,"YYYY-MM-DD") in LibreOffice 25.8.7.3 (headless, with forced recalculation) and it returned 2026-09-01 — exactly the expected result. We then ran the same formulas in Google Sheets, executed 2026-08-30: a formula-only workbook goes into Google Drive, which converts it to a Sheet and recalculates every formula with Google’s own engine, and comes back out as .xlsx carrying the values Google computed. It returned 2026-09-01 for the worked example, the same value LibreOffice produced. Both engines’ numbers on this page are executed results. The Excel formula follows Microsoft’s official documented syntax — we do not run desktop Excel.
